Plainsong Live presents a series of sessions set in intimate spaces that allow each artist to showcase their individual characters in a way they have never before. Each episode is directed by filmmaker Anggun Priambodo. Live stream new episodes here every two weeks and chat with our featured artists.
Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta-based Senyawa mixes influences from Indonesian musical and folklore traditions with experimental music, using self-built musical instruments made from bamboo and traditional agricultural tools from rural Indonesia. Their lyrics are in various languages of Indonesia, including Sulawesian, Javanese, and Indonesian. The duo has performed extensively all over Asia, Australia, and Europe.
Mataram
Garage punk duo Sundancer strongly maintains their Garage Rock character by presenting rock music with wild fuzz, a wave of ferocious reverb, and hypnotic jungle beats. The band, formed in Lombok by Decky Jaguar and Oom Robo from the legendary surf rock unit Southern Beach Terror, insists on using cheap equipment and Indonesian lyrics to stay true to the garage genre.
Barcelona – Malang
The duo is comprised of Barcelona-based composer and video artist Grey Filastine and Indonesian vocalist Ruth Nova. Their music collides electronic beat production with dense layers of voice, concrete sounds, analogue synths and strings. Pitchfork says “they sound less like world music and more like music from another world.” Another world is exactly what they aim to create, using sound, video, design, and dance to express a radically different vision of the possible.
